Faith and Freedom

Independence Day is a time to reflect on our history and our growth as a nation; a time to gather with friends and loved ones to enjoy the holiday; and a time to celebrate the birth of our country and the personal freedoms we hold dear.

Have you ever wondered why God gave mankind liberty?

Our Creator God, in His infinite power, could simply have created the human race and enslaved us to His mighty will. Instead, He gave us intellect, discernment, and freedom of choice.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

— Galatians 5:1

Life might be simpler if we were bound to the Ten Commandments — God’s holy law — by force. What if doing wrong simply wasn’t an option? What if all of our choices were determined for us, and we didn’t have a say in the matter?

What might life look like, without freedom?

God’s power is absolute, His knowledge is all-encompassing, and His wisdom is infinite. God is also love, and because of His love for us, He gives us freedom. We are not bent to His will, but free to choose our own path. He sacrificed His only Son, Jesus Christ, in payment for our sins and to purchase our freedom for all eternity — but still, we have a choice.

We can choose follow where God leads, and that makes all the difference.

God isn’t worried about what color your hair is, how you decorate your home, whether you eat eggs or a bowl of cereal for breakfast, or which route you take to work.

God gives us freedom in every aspect of our lives, and in turn, He asks us to turn our faces toward the light, and to listen for His call.

We are free to live selfishly, but God longs for us to love and uplift others.

We are free to act out our anger and frustration in unhealthy ways, but God asks us to seek His peace for us.

We are free to make our own way in this world, but He asks us to choose the path He has laid out for our lives.

When you admire the Stars & Stripes waving in the breeze or the fireworks bursting overhead this 4th of July, take a moment to thank God for the true freedom we have in Jesus Christ.
